HERITAGE PARK
POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Irish National Heritage Park
Stepping into the park feels less like visiting a museum and more like walking through a portal into the past. It spans 35 acres of wetlands, woodlands, and estuary trails, and the air is often thick with the scent of woodsmoke from open fires. The setting is immersive; you move seamlessly from the rugged camps of Mesolithic hunters to the organized settlements of the Vikings, all grounded in a landscape that feels ancient and untouched.
The Crannóg
A standout feature is the reconstructed Crannóg (lake dwelling). Situated on an artificial island and defended by a timber palisade, it offers a striking visual of how wealthy farming families lived securely on the water during the Early Medieval period.
Viking Boatyard
The park features a meticulously recreated Viking boatyard, complete with a longship, showcasing the maritime heritage that shaped coastal Ireland.
The Hill of Carrig
Unlike the reconstructions, this site contains the authentic archaeological remains of the first Norman fortification built in Ireland in 1169, providing a tangible link to the invasion that changed the country forever.
Falconry Centre
The on-site Falconry Centre allows visitors to encounter birds of prey, reviving the ancient sport of kings in its historical context.
Guided Tours
While you can explore on your own, the costumed guides are exceptional. They offer three distinct tour themes: Pre-Historic Ireland, Early Christian Ireland, and the Age of Invasion. Choose the era that fascinates you most or do all of them one after another (with short pauses between).
