COOLALINGO

WATERFALLS

Tucked away in the rugged and historically rich Glenmalure Valley, Coolalingo Waterfalls are shrouded in a dense canopy of native oak and pine, creating a "fairytale" aesthetic where dappled light filters through the leaves to dance on the moss-covered rocks. Coolalingo is a hidden sanctuary where the rush of water harmonises with the rustling forest wind.

The Triple Cascade

Coolalingo is often referred to locally as the "Three Waterfalls." It consists of a series of three distinct cascades that tumble down the hillside before joining the Avonbeg River. This tiered structure creates multiple pools and photographic angles that change dynamically as you ascend the riverbank.

A Hidden Gem

While Powerscourt Waterfall claims the fame, Coolalingo claims the mystery. It is not signposted on the main road and remains a true "secret" spot known mostly to landscape photographers and local hikers. This lack of commercial infrastructure preserves its wild, untouched charm.

The Glenmalure Valley

The waterfall sits in Ireland’s longest glacial valley. The backdrop is dramatic—flanked by the Lugnaquilla mountain range—providing a stark contrast between the towering, exposed peaks above and the sheltered, lush microclimate of the waterfall below.

Visiting and Access

Access is an adventure in itself. You can park near the Glenmalure Lodge (a classic hikers' pub) or there’s a small layby a little way up from the Wicklow Way junction.

Right Side Access (easiest)

Walk up the road and keep a sharp eye out for a small, unmarked gap in the wall or vegetation on the river side—it is easily missed. You can then follow the trail along the river rapids to the falls.

Left Side Access (Harder)

If you walk a little way up the main hiking route to the left of the river, you can find several points that lead steeply down to the river where you can then walk to the falls. In the summer, it is possible to carefully step on stones to enter the beautiful clearing and view all three falls. In the winter I recommend accessing from the right as you get better views of the falls at this time of year and can get closer.
