MOUNT USHER
GARDENS
Mount Usher Gardens is a world-renowned example of a "Robinsonian" garden, located in Ashford, County Wicklow. Extending over 22 acres along the banks of the River Vartry, it is celebrated for its informal, naturalistic design that prioritises harmony with the surrounding landscape over rigid structure.
Atmosphere and Style
The gardens offer a romantic and tranquil experience, defined by the winding River Vartry which flows through the centre, creating a series of cascades and weirs. It’s one of my favourite places to visit. The design philosophy follows the principles of William Robinson, meaning plants are cultivated in a way that mimics nature rather than in formal bedding schemes. The garden is free-flowing and informal, with winding paths leading through groves, glades, and riverbanks. The river is the garden's spine, crossed by charming suspension bridges and stone weirs that add the soothing sound of moving water to the atmosphere. Since 1980, the gardens have been maintained entirely on organic principles, without the use of herbicides or pesticides.
Botanical Highlights
Home to over 5,000 distinct plant species, Mount Usher is a botanical treasure trove that offers interest in every season. The collection includes many "Champion Trees" of Ireland, such as Montezuma pines, Eucryphia, and Nothofagus (southern hemisphere beeches). Spring brings spectacular displays of rhododendrons, magnolias, and camellias. Summer features herbaceous plants and flowering meadows, while autumn is famous for the vibrant colors of the Maple Walk and Golden Larch.
Visitor Amenities
The experience is complemented by high-quality facilities managed by Avoca, located at the entrance courtyard. The Avoca Garden Café serves a delicious seasonal breakfast and lunch, with outdoor seating in the spring and summer. There is also an outdoor shopping courtyard that includes an Avoca food market, bakery, and gift shop, along with independent boutiques and a botanical greenhouse selling plants.
Opening Hours
The gardens are open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
