A Rainy Look at an 800-Year-Old Irish Abbey in Co Wicklow ☘️

Despite its name, it has no glass in the arches, but is dripping with history. Look out for the pyramid at the end!

Wondering what happened to this massive stone structure? Step into the atmospheric ruins of Baltinglass Abbey in County Wicklow, Ireland.

In this short ASMR experience, I explore the striking stone arches and weather-beaten graves of a site that has stood for centuries. Founded in 1148 by Dermot MacMurrough, the King of Leinster, Baltinglass Abbey (historically known as Vallis Salutis or the "Valley of Salvation") was once one of the wealthiest Cistercian monasteries in Ireland. Today, the majestic Gothic arches and Romanesque stone pillars remain completely open to the elements. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the site was eventually abandoned, leaving these spectacular arches windowless but incredibly photogenic. The moody Irish weather only adds to the magic of these ancient grounds along the River Slaney.
