Framing the Winter Water
Looking out through the bare branches, the water was shimmering like liquid silver. It’s strange to think that these lakes were actually dug out by hand during the Famine years as relief work. It adds a heavy, poignant history to what is now such a peaceful spot.
The reeds at the water's edge are all turned to that rusty gold colour, waiting for spring to properly kick in. There’s something special about the Johnstown Castle Estate in the "off-season". It’s quieter, moodier, and perfect for just standing still and breathing in the cold air. Definitely worth a visit if you need to clear your head.
