Not Actually A Volcano
I absolutely love how the landscape changes when you view it through a natural frame. I took this shot from near Ravens Rock in 2024 looking out towards the Great Sugar Loaf, and the contrast really caught my eye. You have those warm, golden greens of the forestry trees in the foreground against the cool, moody blues of the mountain in the back.
It’s funny, looking at it like this, you can see why so many people think the Sugar Loaf is an extinct volcano. But, here is a little fact for your next hike: it’s actually made of metamorphic quartzite. Basically, it’s a giant rock that was too stubborn to erode away when the rest of the landscape softened down.
