HILL PARK
POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Killiney Hill Park
Rising above the south Dublin coastline, Killiney Hill Park is a breathtaking coastal escape that seamlessly blends mature woodland with sweeping, spectacular panoramic scenery.
Unique Features
The park is crowned by a striking stone obelisk, erected in 1742, which serves as a majestic historical focal point against the skyline. Just a short stroll away sits a quirky, stepped pyramid known locally as the 'wishing stone', providing a brilliant backdrop for photographs. The landscape itself is dramatically varied, descending on its western flank into the sheer, granite cliffs of the historic Dalkey Quarry.
360-Degree Views
From the park’s 153-metre summit, visitors are rewarded with unobstructed 360-degree vistas—taking in the elegant sweep of Dublin Bay and Dún Laoghaire Harbour to the northwest, Bray Head and the rugged Wicklow Mountains to the south, and, on exceptionally clear days, the distant peaks of Wales.
Red Squirrels
The hillside woodland here is beautiful and particularly popular with dog-walkers. It includes a protected area for the nurturing of the red squirrel population. For the highest chance of a sighting, the insider secret is to arrive early in the morning, just after sunrise, when the park is at its quietest and the squirrels are actively foraging. Bring a pair of binoculars and direct your gaze upward into the conifer canopy rather than scanning the ground.
