POCKET IRELANDPlace Guides › Mullaghmeen Forest

Tucked away in the northern reaches of County Westmeath, Mullaghmeen Forest is a tranquil oasis that stands as the largest planted beech woodland in Ireland. As you step into this 400-hectare expanse, the atmosphere is immediately calming; the rustling canopy of ancient beech, Sitka spruce, and noble fir filters the sunlight, casting a verdant glow across the forest floor.

Mullaghmeen Hill

The forest’s unique topography culminates at the summit of Mullaghmeen Hill. At 258 metres, it holds the charming distinction of being the lowest county high point in Ireland. Reaching the top via the Blue Route rewards walkers with sweeping, panoramic views across the shimmering waters of Lough Sheelin and into the neighbouring hills of County Cavan. The woodland is also steeped in history; traversing the White Walk reveals poignant echoes of the past, including the relic walls of famine fields, a traditional Booley Hut used for summer grazing, and old flax pits linked to the historic linen industry.

Walking Routes

Pink Multi-Access Trail (0.2 km)
A brief, linear path with a smooth, flat surface. It is ideal for wheelchair users or buggies, offering a quick, tranquil immersion into the crisp, pine-scented air without any demanding terrain.

Yellow Route (1.5 km)
A gentle, easy loop taking roughly 30 to 40 minutes. It is perfect for a leisurely stroll, guiding you through a spectacular corridor of ancient beech trees that glow with vibrant greens in spring and fiery coppers in autumn.

Red Route (3.5 km)
Taking about an hour and a half, this moderate loop takes you up and down several gentle hills. It is steeped in history, guiding walkers past old flax pits and the atmospheric remains of famine fields. It trades sweeping vistas for the intimate, sensory beauty of the dense woodland floor.

Blue (Summit) Route (4.5 km)
The path to the peak. This moderate-to-strenuous trail requires a bit more exertion, leading you past a historic Booley Hut (a traditional summer grazing shelter) and up a steep incline to the summit cairn of Mullaghmeen Hill (258 metres). Here, the trees break, rewarding your effort with those highly anticipated, sweeping views across the shimmering waters of Lough Sheelin and into County Cavan.

White Route (8 km)
The most extensive offering, taking over two hours to complete. Best suited for seasoned walkers, this route skirts the outer boundaries of the forest, combining deep woodland immersion with historical echoes and sporadic countryside views.
