POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Rock of Dunamase
Perched dramatically on a 46-metre limestone outcrop above the sweeping plains of County Laois, the Rock of Dunamase is a breathtaking testament to Ireland’s turbulent and storied past. As you ascend the rugged hillside, the crisp breeze whistling through the ruins evokes tales of Viking raiders, Gaelic clans, and Anglo-Norman conquerors.
Once the formidable fortress of Diarmait Mac Murchada and part of the legendary dowry of his daughter Aoife upon her marriage to Strongbow, the site is now a magnificent collection of crumbling curtain walls, a barbican gate, and the remnants of a great hall. Destroyed by Cromwellian forces in 1650, the shattered, weathered masonry now rests peacefully amid vibrant, scent-laden grasses. The true reward of this ascent is the unobstructed, 360-degree panoramic vista over the Golden Vale, where the distant Slieve Bloom Mountains seamlessly meet the sky.
For the most magical experience, time your visit for sunrise or sunset, when the golden light bathes the ancient stone in a warm, fiery glow. The site remains a serene hidden gem, completely free of modern commercial distractions, allowing you to explore the atmospheric ruins at your own pace. Do bear in mind that the terrain is uneven and steep in places, making sturdy footwear essential for your comfort.
