Carrigfoyle Quarry offers a striking contrast to the typical rolling green hills of the Irish countryside. Transformed from a disused industrial site into a serene nature preserve, the area is defined by its "mirror lake" - a deep, still body of water that reflects the jagged, pink-hued quartzite cliffs rising steeply from its shores.

The Mirror Lake and Quartzite Cliffs

The centrepiece of the reserve is the man-made lake, formed where the old quarry pit filled with groundwater. The water is framed by sheer rock faces composed of Cambrian quartzite and siltstone, which glow with warm yellow and pink tones during the "golden hour" of sunrise or sunset.

Panoramic Vistas from the Rock

A short but steep climb to the top of the main rocky outcrop (often called Carrigfoyle Rock or Windgap Rocks) rewards visitors with one of the best views in the southeast. On a clear day, you can see the Saltee Islands, the Wexford coastline, and across the estuary to the Hook Head Lighthouse.

Historical Significance

The site is steeped in history, particularly relating to the 1798 Rebellion. The Windgap Rocks served as a lookout post for rebels, and the nearby "Three Rocks" trail traces the path of a significant battle, adding a layer of cultural depth to the scenic beauty.

Visitor Insights

Swimming is Prohibited
Despite the inviting look of the water, swimming is strictly forbidden due to the extreme depth, hidden submerged rocks, and the risk of cold water shock. It is a place for admiring from the shore, not entering.

Accessibility vs. Adventure
The main loop around the lake is relatively flat and accessible (gravel paths), suitable for families and casual walkers. However, those seeking the panoramic views must be prepared for uneven, rocky ground and steep inclines leading up to the viewpoints.

Facilities & Refreshments
The site is well-equipped for a relaxing visit, featuring ample free parking, accessible toilets, and picnic benches. A popular coffee truck is frequently stationed near the entrance, making it easy to grab a hot drink after a walk.
