The Moat

Drimnagh is the only castle in Ireland with a fully functioning, flooded moat, offering a visual and atmospheric experience that is unique on the island. Fed by the Bluebell stream - a tributary of the River Camac - the moat was originally constructed in the 13th century as a defensive barrier. Its primary purpose was to prevent attackers from tunnelling beneath the limestone walls, a tactic known as 'mining', which would have collapsed the fortifications.

Small, but Charming

The castle’s charm lies in its intimate, lived-in scale rather than overwhelming grandeur. It’s a small site that takes a maximum of 45 minutes to look around. The Great Hall, with its magnificent 15th-century oak roof, feels ready for a medieval banquet, while the narrow spiral staircases and atmospheric undercroft whisper of centuries of defence and daily life. Outside, the formal 17th-century parterre garden is a hidden sanctuary of box hedges and medicinal herbs, meticulously maintained to reflect the layout of a bygone era.
