HOOK LIGHTHOUSE
POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Hook Lighthouse
Hook Lighthouse is a striking landmark perched on the rugged tip of the Hook Peninsula. Standing for over 800 years, it is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world.
Architectural Grandeur
The structure is famous for its distinctive black and white horizontal stripes, which serve as a clear daymark for sailors navigating the treacherous "graveyard of a thousand ships." Another distinctive feature is its massive medieval walls that reach up to four meters in thickness.
Guided Tours
To truly appreciate the history, take the guided tour to hear stories of the monks who first lit beacon fires here in the 5th century.
As part of the tour you assess the balcony where you are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the Wexford coastline and the vast, shimmering expanse of the sea.
Whale Watching
During the winter months, keep a keen eye on the horizon; the waters around the headland are a prime spot for spotting humpback and fin whales.
