Stepping into Kilfane Glen is like entering a living time capsule of the late 18th century. Unlike the manicured lawns of many stately homes, this garden was designed in the Romantic style of the 1790s, which prized rugged, untamed beauty and "picturesque" seclusion.
Waterfall and “Fairytale” Cottage
The glen’s centerpiece is a dramatic 30-foot waterfall, which, despite its natural appearance, is a feat of Georgian engineering fed by a mile-long canal. Facing the falls sits a charming Cottage Orné (ornamental cottage). With its thatched roof and rustic detailing, it was built specifically for the original owners to sit and admire the "savage" beauty of the landscape.
Contemporary Art
Unusually, the glen creates a dialogue between the past and present. While the lower glen maintains historically accurate 18th-century planting - drifts of foxgloves, wood anemones, and ferns - the upper garden frequently hosts contemporary art installations commissioned by the Kilfane Trust, offering a striking contrast to the ancient moss-covered stones and grottoes.
