LOUGH DAN

POCKET IRELANDPlace Guides › Lough Dan

Deep within the Wicklow Mountains, Lough Dan offers a solitude that is increasingly rare in the modern world. This boomerang-shaped ribbon of water requires a dedicated journey to reach, ensuring it remains a quiet sanctuary for hikers and nature purists.

Unique Features

The lake’s most striking feature is its startling contrast between the inky water and the patches of white granitic sand at its northwestern shore, brought down by the Inchavore River. Framed by the peaks of Knocknacloghoge and Kanturk, the valley feels ancient and untouched. The white sand beach is a dream on a sunny day and feels like your own private paradise beside the calm lake waters.

Scenic Isolation

Because there is no direct road access to the shoreline, the area remains free of the casual crowds found elsewhere in Wicklow. The terrain is rough, often boggy in the lake valley, and requires a significant walk to reach the water.

The Luggala Estate Route (The 'Pier Gates')

This is the most popular and scenic approach (but also the longest route). It begins high on the R759 road, offering immediate, sweeping views of Lough Tay (the Guinness Lake) before you descend into the valley towards Lough Dan.

The Start Point
The walk begins at the white 'Pier Gates' (the entrance to Luggala Estate). There is a pedestrian kissing gate here.

Parking
You cannot park at the gates themselves. Use the Lough Tay Car Park or, if that is closed, use the lay-bys on the R759 road, then walk briefly along the road to the gates.

The Route
A paved private road winds down the valley floor, eventually turning into a track that leads to the northern shores of Lough Dan.

The Kanturk/Oldbridge Route

This southern approach offers a wilder, quieter experience. It starts from the hamlet of Oldbridge and follows the Inchavore River.

The Start Point
The hamlet of Oldbridge, near the Lough Dan Scout Centre.

Parking
Do not park in the Scout Centre (private property). There is a small public lay-by in Oldbridge, approximately 200 metres before the Scout Centre entrance.

The Route
From the lay-by, you can walk up the road (with the lake on your right) until it bends left slightly and a little further up you will find the walking route entrance on the right-hand side.
