Tucked away in the rolling hills of North Wexford, just a stone's throw from the Wicklow border, Ballyfad Wood offers an atmosphere of ancient tranquility. The woodland feels dense and protective, a sanctuary that changes dramatically with the seasons, shifting from the stark, architectural beauty of winter to a lush, verdant cathedral in the summer months.

Mature Woodland

Unlike many commercial plantations, Ballyfad boasts stands of mature broadleaf trees, including towering beech and oak, which allow dappled sunlight to reach the forest floor, supporting a rich biodiversity of ferns and wildflowers.

Seasonal Delights

The crowning glory of Ballyfad is undoubtedly its spectacular springtime transformation. It is one of the finest locations in the southeast for witnessing the native bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta). In late April and early May, the forest floor is washed in a sea of vibrant violet-blue. The contrast against the fresh green of unfolding beech leaves creates a surreal, almost magical landscape.

Historical Echoes

As you walk, keep an eye out for moss-covered stone walls and the faint outlines of old "famine roads," including the possible site of the old “Dublin Road”. Small silent reminders of the area's rural history.

Two Entrances

If you enter the woods at the Goteen Car Park, you’ll walk through a beautiful oak tree tunnel and then make your choice of one of the three walking routes of different lengths that are shown on the signs. There is another entrance and car park at the other end of the woods which features a beautiful, peaceful spot by the stream with benches, a sensory path for kids and a boardwalk amongst a small section of the forest. This is ideal for families.
