JOHNSTOWN

CASTLE

Johnstown Castle is a gem of the Gothic Revival style near Wexford. Even as you approach, the castle’s silhouette, pierced by turrets silvery limestone towers, is impressive to behold. There are no less than three man-made lakes that make the grounds like a scene plucked straight from a storybook.

The Castle

The castle’s fairytale appearance is the result of extensive 19th-century remodelling, but its core dates back to Norman times. Its interiors are equally lavish, featuring wood-panelled rooms, crystal chandeliers, and secret "priest holes" recently rediscovered during conservation.

The Three Lakes

Castle Lake (5 acres)

This is the most photographed of the three, acting as a shimmering mirror for the castle’s Gothic towers. The reflection of the turrets in the water creates the estate’s signature "fairytale" image.

Garden Lake

Often referred to as the middle lake, this body of water is integrated into the ornamental gardens. It is surrounded by statues and follies, including a fishing tower, offering a more curated and romantic atmosphere.

Lower Lake (12 acres)

The largest of the three, this is actually the largest inland freshwater lake in County Wexford. It has a wilder, more natural feel compared to the others and is circled by a recently extended walking trail that takes about an hour to complete.

Wildlife and Atmosphere

The lakes serve as a sanctuary for a rich variety of wildlife. As you walk the banks, you are likely to spot graceful swans, herons, and moorhens. The surrounding woodlands are also a stronghold for red squirrels and pine martens, making the lakeside paths perfect for nature enthusiasts.

Visiting

While you can roam the gardens freely with a grounds ticket, access to the castle interior is by guided tour only. These tours are popular and often sell out, so book your slot online well in advance.

Late spring is particularly enchanting when the rhododendrons and azaleas in the woodland gardens are in full bloom.

The estate is very family-friendly, with a woodland playground and accessible paths around the lakes. The castle itself is also fully accessible, with lifts to all floors—a rarity for historic Irish buildings.
