MAGHERAMORE
BEACH
A secluded beach along County Wicklow's rugged coastline, Magheramore Beach is one of the region's "hidden gem" beaches. It is a pristine cove defined by its sheltered, crescent-shaped stretch of soft golden sand and crystal-clear waters. The atmosphere is tranquil as it is enclosed by steep, verdant cliffs and rolling farmland. It can get busy in the summer months.
Cinematic Feel
The beach’s dramatic scenery has made it a favored location for television and film productions, serving as a backdrop for series such as Vikings, Camelot, and Redwater.
The coastline here is peppered with intriguing rock formations and small caves that are revealed at low tide, offering excellent opportunities for exploration and photography.
Fun Fact: In 2018, the beach made headlines as the site of a Guinness World Record "Strip and Dip," where over 2,500 women braved the cold waters to raise funds for cancer research.
Visiting and Access
Access to the beach is via a pedestrian walkway that crosses private land. Parking is limited and can be difficult during peak summer months; visitors often park on the roadside, so arrive early or late in the day to secure a spot. It’s free in the winter but there’s a small fee in summer. Note also that the walk down involves a steep incline that may be challenging for those with mobility issues or heavy gear.
For Those Who Like a Climb and a Short Hike…
If you are happy with doing a little clambering over jagged rocks, there is a fairly short (30 minutes or so) route across the rocks on the right-side of the beach that lead to a steep cliff-side path that heads up to some fields with livestock above and great views across to Wicklow Head Lighthouse. You can then circle back to the beach entrance at the top of the hill.
Facilities
This is a "wild" beach with virtually no commercial facilities. There are no permanent toilets, cafes, or lifeguard stations are present. Visitors should pack everything they need, including water and snacks, and be prepared to take all rubbish home with them ("Leave No Trace").
Best Time to Visit
For the most magical experience, visit during a weekday evening. The beach is renowned for its stunning "afterglow" sunsets, where the fading light reflects off the wet sand and cliffs, creating a surreal, painterly effect.
