TOMNAFINNOGE
WOODS

One of the last surviving fragments of the great oak forests that once blanketed County Wicklow, Tomnafinnoge Woods is a beautiful location to take leisurely stroll. The canopy is dense and cathedral-like, filtering sunlight into shifting patterns on the forest floor and the beautiful shallow river creates a peaceful sonic accompaniment as you walk.
The River Derry
Winding through the trees is the gentle River Derry, which adds the soothing sound of running water to the rustle of leaves. You may also stumble upon the remains of a 19th-century railway viaduct, a stone ghost of the industrial past now reclaimed by nature, bridging the gap between history and the wild.
Seasonal Delights
If possible, time your visit for late April or early May. The forest floor transforms into a stunning sea of violet-bluebells. And it’s needless to say that the forest is a riot of rich warm colour in the darkening months of autumn.
Wildlife
Tomnafinnoge is a sanctuary for the Great Spotted Woodpecker, a species that has recently recolonised Ireland. Bring binoculars and listen for their distinctive drumming against the high branches. I’ve also spied little egrets and herons by the river.
The Walks
There are three main looped walks, all clearly marked with colour-coded arrows on posts. The River Walk is particularly serene, offering easy terrain and beautiful views of the water reflecting the ancient branches above.
