Little Autumn Umbrella

I spotted this little character at Red Kite Walk back in the autumn, standing proud amongst the decaying leaves and fallen twigs. I’m not entirely certain of the species—mushroom identification can be a bit of a dark art! It reminds me of a Russet Toughshank (Gymnopus dryophilus), but the fungi world is vast and tricky. If any mycology experts are reading this, do let me know in the comments!

Whatever its name, it’s doing important work. Fungi are the unsung heroes of the forest, breaking down the old wood and leaves to feed the soil. It’s a beautiful cycle, and seeing this little cap pushing through the damp earth really reminded me of how alive the forest floor actually is.
