Deep in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains lies Arts Lough, a shimmering corrie lake perched on a dramatic shelf above the Glenmalure Valley, a place of profound solitude and rugged beauty.
Atmosphere
The air at Arts Lough is often thick with the scent of damp peat and wild heather. As you ascend from the valley floor, the roar of the Avonbeg River fades, replaced by the whistling wind and the occasional cry of a peregrine falcon. The lake itself is a dark, crystalline mirror, cradled by the steep, rocky slopes of Cloghernagh. On a misty day, the atmosphere is hauntingly prehistoric, with low clouds clinging to the granite crags, while on clear days, the panoramic views stretching across the emerald expanse of the Glenmalure Valley are nothing short of breathtaking.
Unique Features
The Glacial Setting
Arts Lough is a classic example of a "hanging" lake, carved by glacial action during the last Ice Age. It sits approximately 600 metres above sea level, providing a natural vantage point over Ireland's longest U-shaped glacial valley.
Rugged Terrain
Unlike the boardwalks of Glendalough, the route here is wild and untamed. The path is often boggy, rocky and steep, requiring a sense of adventure and sturdy footwear.
Historical Echoes
The surrounding Glenmalure Valley served as a historic stronghold for Irish rebel clans like the O'Byrnes and O'Tooles. Remnants of old lead mines can still be seen in the lower reaches of the valley, adding a layer of industrial heritage to the natural splendour.
