The BirdWatch Ireland's East Coast Nature Reserve is a sprawling 92-hectare sanctuary nestled within the Murrough Wetlands of County Wicklow. Originally intensive farmland, this site has been meticulously restored into a thriving mosaic of rare fen, wet grasslands, and birch woodland.
Atmosphere
Visitors are greeted by a landscape that shifts with the seasons. In the summer, the air is filled with the melodious songs of Sedge Warblers and the rhythmic hovering of dragonflies over marshy pools. The winter months transform the reserve into a vital haven for migratory waterfowl, including Whooper Swans and Greenland White-fronted Geese. Unique features such as elevated boardwalks allow you to traverse the soft, marshy terrain without disturbance, leading to three discreet observation hides that offer panoramic views of the grazing cattle and the elusive Water Rail.
Visit at Dusk
Visiting at sunset often rewards you with sightings of Short-eared Owls or Hen Harriers as they hunt over the open grasslands.
Footwear Matters
Even in the height of summer, the trails can be mucky. Sturdy, waterproof boots are essential for exploring the woodland and fen sections comfortably. Care should be taken on the boadwalk areas as they can get very slippy.
Coastal Trail Winter Closure
Note that the coastal trail is closed during winter to minimise disturbance to the wildlife; however, excellent views are still available from the adjoining sea bank.
