Stepping onto the majestic grounds of Castletown House, you are instantly transported to the grandeur of 18th-century Ireland. As the country's first and finest Palladian mansion, the estate radiates an atmosphere of aristocratic elegance, nestled seamlessly within 120 acres of impeccably designed parklands. The crisp scent of ancient woodlands and the gentle murmur of the River Liffey create a truly tranquil setting, inviting visitors to completely escape the modern world.

The House

The architectural splendour of the house is simply breathtaking. Commissioned in 1722 for William Conolly, the sprawling stone facade conceals an interior of unparalleled opulence. Visitors can marvel at the mesmerising Long Gallery, bathed in the iridescent glow of three original Murano-glass chandeliers, and admire the masterful, sweeping stucco plasterwork crafted by the renowned Lafranchini brothers. The estate also boasts Ireland’s only fully intact 18th-century Print Room, a delicate and fascinating glimpse into historic high-society pastimes. Beyond the mansion, the sprawling French Baroque-style gardens feature a picturesque lake, a classical temple, and a striking obelisk.

For the most enriching experience, joining a guided tour is highly recommended; the knowledgeable guides breathe life into the walls, sharing captivating tales of the Conolly family's stratospheric rise to power.

The Grounds

Stepping beyond the magnificent stone facade of Castletown House, the estate reveals a breathtaking expanse of almost 50 hectares of meticulously restored 18th-century parklands. Designed to reflect the immense wealth and visionary taste of the Conolly family, the grounds seamlessly blend formal elegance with the untamed beauty of the Irish countryside. Sweeping, manicured lawns give way to ancient, whispering woodlands, all bordered by the gentle, meandering curves of the River Liffey, offering a profoundly tranquil atmosphere that feels miles away from the modern world.

The landscape is punctuated by architectural marvels that draw the eye and capture the imagination. To the rear of the house, grand vistas guide your gaze towards the river, while hidden within the woodlands lies the enchanting classical temple, complete with stately columns. Visitors can also discover the historic stone ice house, a fascinating feat of Georgian engineering used to preserve provisions. A defining feature of the wider estate's visual landscape is the imposing Conolly Folly, a striking 42-metre high obelisk commissioned by Katherine Conolly to provide local employment during the harsh winter of 1739.
