POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Ennereilly Beach
Located just north of Arklow on the stunning County Wicklow coastline, this tranquil stretch of shore is far less manicured than its famous neighbour, Brittas Bay, offering a wilder, more textured seaside experience.
The Atmosphere
Stepping onto Ennereilly Beach (also known as Ennereilly Strand), you are immediately struck by a sensory shift. Instead of the soft, muted padding of fine sand, your footsteps are accompanied by the sharp, rhythmic crunch of millions of shells. The beach is a mesmerising mosaic of coastal debris, pebbles, and sand, backed by low cliffs and rolling dunes. It possesses a quiet, rugged charm, far removed from bustling tourist traps, where the rhythmic crashing of the Irish Sea dictates the pace of the day.
The Shell Phenomenon
The most remarkable thing about the small stretch of beach is the sheer number of oyster shells there. The vast majority of these thick, textured husks belong to Ostrea edulis, the Native European Flat Oyster. In the 19th century, the nearby town of Arklow was the beating heart of an enormous oyster fishery.
Historically, a colossal, naturally occurring oyster reef stretched for 80 kilometres along this coastline, from Wicklow Head all the way south to Raven Point. At its peak in 1863, local fisheries harvested a staggering 40 million oysters in a single season. Sadly, a combination of severe overharvesting, pollution, and disease led to the eventual collapse of these magnificent, self-sustaining reefs.
However, the legacy of the reef remains. The ocean continues to churn up and deposit millions of these historic shells onto Ennereilly and surrounding beaches.
Visitor Insights
For those planning a visit, Ennereilly is an exceptional location for beachcombing, photography, and peaceful walks. It is highly regarded by local anglers as a prime spot for sea fishing—both day and night—with catches including bass, flounder, and smooth hound. If you plan to swim, proceed with caution: the seabed here harbours sharp rocks, and the water deepens quite suddenly in places. It is also a wonderful spot for dog walkers, though you will want sturdy footwear to navigate the dense banks of shells comfortably.
