The Gardens
At the heart of the estate are roughly 2.5 hectares of meticulously restored pleasure gardens, visually arresting with their magnificent herbaceous borders, sweeping Lime Avenue, and a historic Yew Walk. Visitors can explore the evocative, moss-draped ruins of a medieval motte and the ancestral family church of St. Oliver Plunkett, who was born on the estate. For families, the interactive Fairy Trail weaves an enchanting narrative through the woodlands, complete with hidden architectural treasures, tactile sculptures, and whimsical 'Alice in Wonderland' characters nestled amongst giant trees.
The Coffee Shop and Loughcrew Cairns
To make the most of your visit, take time to enjoy the scenic, 6-kilometre lake walk that borders the estate before retreating to the Limetree Coffee Shop. Located near the entrance, it serves exceptional freshly baked scones and cakes—an essential pitstop for any discerning traveller. As you stroll the grounds, be sure to look up towards the surrounding Loughcrew Hills; they are crowned by ancient 4th-millennium BC megalithic cairns. Taking a short drive up to these passage tombs after exploring the gardens offers unparalleled, sweeping views across the Irish countryside.
