Nestled in the breathtaking, unspoiled wilderness of the Wicklow Mountains, Lourdes Grotto in the Glencree Valley offers a profound sense of peace and tranquillity. Shaded by mature trees and set beside the gentle, gurgling waters of the Glencree River, this secluded spiritual haven feels entirely removed from the rush of modern life.
History
Built by the Oblate community, the grotto is a beautiful, rustic stone shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Reconciliation. It rests in a lush, wooded hollow just below the historic Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. The sound of the flowing river and the songs of native Irish birds create a soothing acoustic backdrop for the meticulously maintained shrine, which is often lovingly decorated with fresh floral tributes by locals and pilgrims alike.
German Military Cemetery and Armoury Cafe
For the most immersive experience, visit during the crisp, quiet hours of early morning when the valley is often blanketed in a soft, atmospheric mist. After reflecting at the grotto, take the short walking trail across the picturesque footbridge. It is highly recommended to combine your visit with a contemplative stop at the poignant German Military Cemetery which is just across the road, followed by a warming cup of tea and a taste of fine Irish home cooking at the Armoury Café in the visitor centre.
