MAHON FALLS
POCKET IRELAND › Place Guides › Mahon Falls
Nestled deep within the rugged embrace of the Comeragh Mountains, Mahon Falls offers a breathtaking escape into Ireland’s wild heart. As you approach the glaciated valley, the vast scale of the sandstone cliffs and the sweeping, heather-clad slopes command awe-inspired attention.
Atmosphere
The air is invariably crisp, often carrying the fresh, earthy scent of mist and damp moss. Grazing mountain sheep dot the emerald landscape, adding a quintessential touch of idyllic Irish charm to the remote, pristine environment.
80-Metre Cascade
The spectacular waterfall plunges 80 metres down the cliff face. It is particularly magnificent following heavy rainfall, when the water volume swells into a roaring torrent.
Accessible Wilderness
The base of the falls is reached via a family-friendly, 20 to 30-minute walk each way along a well-maintained gravel path, making this striking scenery very accessible without requiring a strenuous hike.
“Magic Road”
Just moments from the car park lies a famous optical illusion. If you stop your vehicle near the designated markers and release the handbrake, your car will inexplicably appear to roll uphill—a delightful local quirk attributed to 'fairy folk'.
