CASTLE

POCKET IRELANDPlace Guides › Trim Castle

Looming majestically over the tranquil waters of the River Boyne in County Meath, the 12th-century Trim Castle is an awe-inspiring behemoth of stone that commands the surrounding landscape just as it did over eight centuries ago. Stepping onto the sprawling, 30,000-square-metre grounds, one is instantly enveloped by the palpable weight of medieval history.

The Cruciform Keep

At the absolute heart of the fortress stands a colossal, 20-sided cruciform keep. Constructed over 30 years by the Anglo-Norman Lord Hugh de Lacy beginning in 1173, its brooding, three-metre-thick walls make it the largest and best-preserved example of Anglo-Norman military architecture in Ireland.

A masterful modern restoration allows visitors to explore the hollowed-out interior of the keep via suspended metal walkways. Peering down through the vast, open levels induces a thrilling sense of scale, whilst ascending to the roof offers sweeping, unhindered panoramas of the lush Boyne Valley.

The guided tour is the only way to access the interior of the keep. Be prepared to navigate steep, exceptionally narrow spiral stone staircases; sturdy, flat footwear is an absolute necessity.

Cinematic Pedigree

The castle's imposing curtain walls, punctuated by stout defensive towers and the formidable Trim Gate, are instantly recognisable to cinephiles; these very grounds famously doubled as the fortified English city of York in the 1995 epic film Braveheart.

The Porchfields Stroll

For a truly evocative perspective, exit the castle and take the riverside walk through the Porchfields towards Newtown Abbey. Looking back at the fortress as the setting sun casts a golden glow on the stone—and illuminates the nearby ruins of the Yellow Steeple—is a photographer’s dream.
