Just a stone's throw from the charming village of Enniskerry lies Knocksink Wood. It is situated in a steep glacial ravine carved by the fast-flowing Glencullen River.

Glacial Ravine

The wood is designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) due to its rare ecology. It sits in a deep, U-shaped valley formed during the last Ice Age, shielding it from strong winds and creating a unique micro-climate. A geological rarity, the wood around the river contains mineral-rich springs that flow over moss and leaves, slowly turning them into rock (tufa) over time.

Walking Routes

There are a couple of fairly easy walking routes through the forest. The main path leads along the river in a pleasant circular route across a couple of foot bridges. It’s an ideal route for families.

There are several other smaller trodden paths in and around the river that enable you to get up to the water and, with a little clambering over rocks, you can reach the top of a lovely small gorge and see the river from above.

I also once found myself on a much longer and intense hiking route that took me high up the valley and back down. When I went, the route was blocked by trees after a storm which I had to climb over. It was beautiful and worth the effort nonetheless.

Monastery?

The woods are located in Monastery, Enniskerry. It is important to note, therefore, that "Monastery" in this specific context refers to the town land name immediately adjacent to the wood, rather than a standing ancient ruin within the forest itself. While the name hints at the area’s historical religious land ownership, if you’re looking for a "Monastic City" with round towers and cathedrals, you’re best off heading to Glendalough!
