Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor Newgrange, Knowth is arguably the more complex and archaeologically diverse of the two. Set within the verdant, rolling landscape of the Boyne Valley, this ancient Neolithic site feels profound and mysterious. As you approach the massive main mound, surrounded by eighteen smaller satellite tombs, the sheer scale of the engineering - older than both Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza - commands a hushed reverence.
Knowth is the artistic capital of prehistoric Europe. It contains more than a third of all known megalithic art in Western Europe, with over 200 decorated stones.
Hidden Gem
Because many tourists flock specifically for the "Newgrange light box" experience, Knowth is often less crowded, allowing for a more intimate inspection of the ancient art.
The Kerbstones
The base of the Great Mound is ringed by 127 massive kerbstones, intricately carved with spirals, lozenges, and crescent shapes. Look specifically for Kerbstone 15 (the "Calendar Stone") and Kerbstone 52, which feature complex astronomical data.
Lunar Alignment
While Newgrange is aligned with the sun, Knowth appears to have a lunar focus. Recent research suggests the carvings may represent the earliest known lunar maps in history.
Dual Passages
Unlike Newgrange, Knowth has two passages comprising the main mound—one facing East and one West—though they do not meet in the middle.
The Top View
Unlike Newgrange, where the highlight is entering the chamber, the interior passages at Knowth are generally restricted for preservation. However, you are often permitted to climb to the top of the Great Mound. This offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Boyne Valley and the neighboring Hill of Slane.
Pre-Book!
You cannot drive directly to the site. You must book a tour through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, located on the south bank of the River Boyne. From there, a shuttle bus takes you to the monuments where an expert guide meets you to give some very interesting background information. After the short tour you’re able to explore the location yourself.
