Unique Features

Monasterboice is world-renowned for having some of the finest High Crosses in Ireland. The crown jewel is Muiredach’s High Cross, widely considered the most beautiful example of its kind in the country. Standing 5.5 meters tall, every inch is intricately carved with biblical scenes that remain startlingly crisp despite their age.

Towering above the crosses is the majestic Round Tower. Standing 28 meters high, this 10th-century watchtower retains its imposing silhouette, though it lacks its original conical cap. It served as both a belfry and a refuge for monks during Viking raids, a silent witness to the turbulent history of the region.

Visitor Insights

While many visitors snap a photo and leave, take the time to examine the panels of Muiredach’s Cross closely. Look for the whimsical detail at the base of the shaft: two cats fighting, or perhaps playing.

Insider Tip

I visited at the wrong time of day for this, but the reliefs on the High Crosses are apparently best viewed when the sun is low in the sky. If possible, visit in the early morning or late afternoon; the angled light creates deep shadows that make the carvings pop, revealing details that are invisible under the flat light of midday.
