Red Kite Walk is an enchanting trail that winds through the lush Kilmagig Woods. The walk offers a perfect blend of rich biodiversity and sweeping panoramas, perched high above the picturesque village of Avoca, County Wicklow and it includes a little detour to a quaint little cemetery on top of a hill with views of the countryside and the occasional red kite swooping.
Majestic Birdlife
As the name suggests, this trail is one of the best locations in Ireland to spot the Red Kite. Reintroduced to the area in 2009, these magnificent birds of prey with their distinctive forked tails can often be seen soaring effortlessly above the tree line.
Panoramic Views
The trail opens up at several points to reveal vistas of the Avoca Valley and the village below, made famous as the filming location for the TV series "Ballykissangel."
Woodland Diversity
The forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers, ferns, and mosses, changing with the seasons from vibrant spring greens to the rusty golds of autumn. In September/October, the wood comes alive with hundreds of brightly-coloured fungi including the delightful (though toxic) fly agaric in what seem to be little “fairy villages” dotted about everywhere you look.
Trail Details
This is a moderate 2.5 km loop that takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The initial section from the car park involves a steep uphill climb, so sturdy walking boots are recommended, especially after rain when the path can be muddy. The trail begins at the car park opposite the church in Avoca village. Follow the red waymarkers.
