TARA COVE
BEACH
“Tara Cove Beach” is basically a small, but beautiful rocky area in the South section of Ballymoney Beach. (The name “Tara Cove” actually refers specifically to a private residential development with exclusive gated access to the shoreline).
Ballymoney Beach
Ballymoney Beach’s atmosphere is one of restorative calm. Unlike the more commercialised bustle of nearby Courtown, Ballymoney feels like a hidden sanctuary. The air is crisp with the scent of salty sea spray and dune grass, and the soundscape is dominated by the rhythmic crashing of the Irish Sea against the shore. It serves as a quieter, family-oriented retreat where the golden sands are firm enough for long, meditative walks, yet soft enough for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.
The Twin Beaches
A distinctive rocky outcrop naturally divides the strand into two sections: the North Beach and the South Beach. The North Beach is generally longer, sandier, and holds a coveted Blue Flag, while the South Beach (Green Coast Award) is smaller and often more sheltered.
Tara Cove Beach is located in the southern stretch of Ballymoney Beach.
Riboned Rock Formations
The rocks here are not merely grey boulders; they are vibrant, multi-colored tapestries of stone. As seen in the intricate detailing of the shoreline, the rocks display mesmerizing, wavy bands of sediment that have been compressed and folded over millennia. These patterns resemble the grain of ancient wood or flowing water frozen in time, featuring rich hues of russet, ochre, and deep purple.
The Golden Hour Glow
To truly appreciate the colours of the rocks (specifically the deep reds and purples shown in the folded layers), visit during the "golden hour" just after sunrise or before sunset. The low light hits the minerals in the rock face, making them glow with an intensity that is lost under the harsh midday sun.
Watch out for the Tides!
If you want to climb over and explore the rocky “Tara Cove” section, make sure you arrive at low tide. It can become difficult to navigate at very high tides. To get the best out of your trip, it is best to visit when the tide is receding to enjoy the full expanse of the sand of the beaches either side.
