The Dark History of this Irish Garden Lake 💔 (Altamont Gardens)

Nature didn't make this idyllic Irish lake - starving men did.

Discover the tragic Victorian history behind Altamont Gardens' "Famine Folly" in Co. Carlow. During the famine, starving locals were forced to dig this lake by hand just to earn survival rations because the wealthy owners refused to hand out "free charity." Today, it stands as a beautiful but haunting reminder of the past.

Located in beautiful Co. Carlow, Ireland, Altamont Gardens is home to a stunning lake that hides a dark past. During the Great Famine, starving locals were forced to dig this massive lake entirely by hand using just shovels. It was a "Famine Folly"—a project created by wealthy landowners who refused to give out "free charity," making desperate people work for survival rations. Today, the estate stands as a testament to history, featuring an ancient glacial glen, over 40 varieties of blooming snowdrops, and "The Temple," a beautiful classical tribute built in 1998 by the final owner, Corona North.
