Standing as a striking architectural curiosity against the pastoral landscape of County Kildare, The Wonderful Barn has an enchanting, almost fairy-tale aura. This unique, corkscrew-shaped folly is steeped in history and a quirky stop-off if passing in the area.

The History

Built in 1743 to store grain and provide local employment during a famine, its defining feature is the continuous exterior stone staircase winding up its conical form, flanked by two smaller dovecotes.

Castletown House

The Wonderful Barn is intimately tied to the nearby grand Castletown House, originally conceived as an elaborate, architectural 'eye-catcher' designed to terminate the eastern vista of the sprawling estate. Commissioned by Katherine Conolly, the philanthropic widow of Speaker William Conolly (who built the main mansion), the barn served a dual purpose. It acted as a decorative folly to be admired from afar and functioned as a practical famine relief project, providing much-needed employment for local workers following a series of harsh winters. Historically, a formal, tree-lined avenue created a direct visual link between the two landmarks, though modern infrastructure has since obscured this uninterrupted view.
