Oak Glen offers a profound sense of restoration and tranquillity, tucked away in the historic Glencree Valley. Unlike the dense, dark conifer plantations common in the region, this woodland is a celebration of light and renewal. The name ‘Cloon’ translates from Irish as ‘meadow in a clearing’, and the area feels open and breathable. As you descend from the car park, the wind often carries the rushing sound of the Glencree River below, while the surrounding hills of the Wicklow Mountains create a dramatic, protective amphitheatre.

Unique Features

The defining feature here is the native woodland restoration. Initiated in the 1990s, the planting of thousands of sessile oaks is slowly returning the valley to the character of the ancient ‘Royal Forest’ that once stood here. As you walk the loop, you are surrounded by these young, vigorous trees, interspersed with birch and Japanese larch. The trail offers sweeping vistas across the valley towards the distinctive profile of the Great Sugar Loaf and the rugged slopes of Knockree Hill. Keep an eye out for the inscribed commemorative stones scattered throughout the wood, marking the community's connection to this reforestation project.

The River Clearing

The “Oak Glen Loop” trail is the main route through the forest and is marked with arrows. However, as you approach the valley with the river down on your left, you’ll come to a fork in the trodden path. If you take the left path (contrary to the arrow sign), it will lead you down to a beautiful clearing by the river which is ideal as a picnic and rest stop.

The "Crann" Connection

In the early 1990s, this woodland was restored through a partnership between Coillte and Crann (an organisation dedicated to replanting Ireland with native broadleaf trees).

Commemorative Stones
As you walk the "Oak Glen" trail, you will notice large stones inscribed with names and dedications. These mark trees that were sponsored by individuals, families, and schools to celebrate births, marriages, or the memory of loved ones.

A "Living" Monument
The idea was to move away from static stone monuments and instead create a "living" memorial. The specific people you read about likely sponsored these oaks to help return the valley to its ancient, native state.

Visitor Insights

For the best experience, visit in late spring when the fresh green canopy is most vibrant, or autumn for a spectacular display of golden hues. The "Oak Glen Loop" begins with a relatively steep descent, so sturdy walking boots are advised. While the path is way-marked, it can be muddy after rain. This is a fantastic alternative to the often-crowded Glendalough - come here for a quiet Sunday morning ramble with a flask of coffee to enjoy at the river's edge.
