GLENMACNASS
WATERFALL
Nestled in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains, Glenmacnass Waterfall offers a dramatic and serene escape into Ireland's rugged wilderness. As you approach along the winding Old Military Road, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking U-shaped glacial valley, where the river suddenly plunges 80 meters down the mountainside.
Geological Boundary
The waterfall marks a significant geological meeting point, flowing over smooth, light-grey porphyritic granite before crashing down between dark, jagged schist rocks that jut out on either side of the valley. It is a place that feels ancient and untouched, providing a perfect snapshot of Ireland’s geological drama without the crowds often found at more commercialised sites.
Glacial Valley Setting
The falls sit at the head of a classic glaciated valley, with steep cliff sides and a flat floor that dates back to the last Ice Age, offering a textbook example of nature's sculpting power.
Three-Tiered Drop
The water doesn't just fall in one sheet but tumbles in three distinct, staggered drops, creating a mesmerising, multi-layered cascade that looks particularly powerful after heavy rainfall.
The Best Viewpoint
While there is a car park at the top of the falls, the most impressive view is actually from the bottom looking up. You can carefully walk back down the road (towards Laragh) to catch the full profile of the water cutting through the rock, but be extremely cautious of oncoming traffic on the narrow bends.
Seasonal Colours
Visit in late summer or early autumn to see the surrounding hillsides ablaze with purple heather, which provides a stunning contrast to the grey rock and white foam of the water.
