Kildare's Wonderful Corkscrew Barn

I was out exploring recently and made stop at the “Wonderful Barn” in Leixlip. Have you ever seen a building quite like it? This corkscrew-shaped beauty, soaring up against the dramatic, cloudy skies, is a real hidden gem on the edge of the Castletown Estate.

It actually has a fascinating, if sombre, history. It was commissioned back in 1743 by Katherine Conolly. It wasn't just a quirky architectural choice; it was built as a famine relief project to provide much-needed employment for the local community during exceptionally hard times. Standing beneath it, admiring the spiral stairs wrapping around the towering stone walls, you really get a sense of the history and the sheer effort it took to construct.
