The dense woodlands of Curtlestown Wood lead you up to Raven’s Rock, perched high in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, with fantastic views of the Glencree Valley and on towards the Irish Sea.

Starting Points

The best approach is probably from the Curtlestown Wood Car Park which takes you through these dense woodlands, creating a sensory transition from the damp, pine-scented forest floor to the exposed, airy heights of the rock face. However, I have also walked from the other direction, parking on the Wicklow Way road near Glencullen and walking through the pine woods that way.

The Granite Tor

The Raven’s Rock itself is a massive outcrop of weathered granite, standing stark against the skyline. It serves as a dramatic geological punctuation mark in an area largely dominated by soft peatland and forestry.

Panoramic Views

From the summit, the vista is exceptional. On a clear day, you can trace the coastline from Dublin Bay down to Bray Head, while turning inland reveals the brooding, heather-clad slopes of Djouce Mountain and Maulin.

Golden Hour Photos

Visit at sunrise or sunset if you want the best photos. The granite sparkles with mica in the low light, and the shadows across the valley create a photographer’s dream, far less crowded than the more popular Glendalough nearby.
