Ireland’s Bizarre 18th-Century "Hobbit Hole" Fridge 🧊
What looks like a cozy Hobbit hole is actually an ingenious 18th-century super-fridge!
Discover the hidden architectural oddities of Castletown House in Co. Kildare, from a riverside ice house to a giant famine-relief barn.
I'm exploring the incredible grounds of Castletown House in County Kildare, Ireland. Built in the 1720s by William Conolly, Ireland's wealthiest man at the time, this massive estate is packed with fascinating historical extravagances. The most interesting highlight? An ingenious 18th-century ice house built into the earth near the River Liffey that workers packed with massive ice blocks, keeping them frozen solid all the way until July! I also take a look at the quirky "Wonderful Barn" built during the brutal 1740s famine, a deceptive gothic gatehouse that is completely plain in the back, and a tribute temple to 1700s superstar Sarah Siddons - all commissioned by the extravagant Lady Louisa.
