Ireland's Largest Planted Beech Forest

I took a trip out to County Westmeath yesterday and, among other places, explored the magical Mullaghmeen Forest. I decided to tackle the Red Route, and honestly, the conditions couldn't have been better. As you can see from the photo, the winter sun was just spectacular, filtering through the bare canopy and lighting up the mossy woodland floor.

I was saddened, upon entering the forest, to see large parts completely destroyed after last year’s Storm Éowyn and Storm Darragh, but luckily the bulk of the woods still remains as you ascend the hill.

Mullaghmeen is apparantly the largest planted beech forest in Ireland. Walking amongst these giants makes you feel incredibly small, but in the best possible way. The dappled light hitting the tree trunks and the quiet stillness of the woods created such a peaceful, grounding atmosphere. If you haven't wandered these trails yet, I highly recommend adding it to your list!
